Why Travel While You are Still Young

Why Travel While You are Still Young

Travel now while you are still young. Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.

Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Most people can look back on their past and feel some sort of regret of an opportunity they passed by. Maybe it’s quitting a certain job or not staying in school or maybe even buying a house at the wrong time. (bet I got a lot of you with THAT one) According to Forbes, not traveling more was number 11 on the list of 25 most things people regret. Why is this? Because traveling is fun. Even when things don’t go as planned. You remember the places you go and the memories you create really do last a lifetime.

Heck, I remember my first time on an airplane when I was 5 years old. The movie they played during the flight was Honey I Shrunk the Kids, we were flying to Little Rock and we snuck a turtle on the plane back to Los Angeles and actually got away with it!

The truth is, traveling while you’re young has great advantages that slowly disappear as you get older.

Travel

First off, you usually have less responsibility when you’re younger. If you’re fresh out of college or high school you probably don’t have a mortgage, kids or even a job. You’re at the point in your life between adolescence and the “real world”. Youth is a time of empowerment and as you get older, life just happens and your priorities change completely.

While you’re young, things are not solidified in your mind in regards to different ideas and experiences. It’s important to realize that “your world” is not the only world out there. Traveling and exploring different cultures will provide knowledge of how other societies function.

You have more energy when you’re younger. While you might not have as much money to travel as an older person, imagine sharing a hostel or backpacking through Europe when your 55. Probably not the most ideal situation.

Traveling looks awesome on a resume. The skills you develop can illustrate your decision making, budgeting and communication skills. Plus, it shows you are independent and have experienced life in a way most people haven’t.

Traveling might just make you a more interesting person. It will broaden your perspective on life and let you see things in a way you never have before.

Know what’s not fun? Worrying about how you’re getting to and from the airport. Opoli will pick you up from your place of residence and drop you off at the airport with plenty of time to make your flight. No more stress about parking your car in a lot or depending on someone for a lift.
